The singer and actress is recovering after an unexpected onstage mishap that led to a painful injury just weeks before a major event.
Jennifer Lopez revealed on May 13 that she sustained a noticeable cut on her face while preparing to host the 2025 American Music Awards. The incident occurred during rehearsals for the upcoming ceremony, drawing attention as the world anticipates her return to the stage in Las Vegas.

While documenting her injury on Instagram Stories, the “Love Don’t Cost a Thing” performer first posted a photo of herself icing her face.

She followed it with an image showing a painful-looking cut across the bridge of her nose. In the caption, she wrote, “So…this happened.”

Later, she shared a photo taken with the doctor who stitched her up. For that caption, she thanked her physician and added, “A week later and a whole lotta ice, I’m good as new [sic].”

The injury was treated by Dr. Jason Diamond, a world-renowned facial plastic surgeon based in Beverly Hills, known for his work with celebrities and his natural aesthetic approach.

Lopez, a three-time American Music Award winner, is expected to host and perform at the 51st edition of the show, airing live on May 26 from the BleauLive Theater in Las Vegas. The event also marks the 50th anniversary of the AMAs.

This year’s ceremony is especially significant for Lopez, who last hosted the AMAs in 2015. In a recent promotional video, she recalled her past appearances on the show.

She reflected on her 2001 debut, highlighting the electric energy in the room. The singer also mentioned a memorable 2013 tribute to Celia Cruz. She described that moment as “one of the most special nights of my life ever.” Lopez praised Cruz as an “icon” and emphasized the show’s ability to connect people through music.

The singer also reminisced about hosting the awards for the first time, recalling how she performed a dance medley of that year’s most popular songs and changed outfits multiple times throughout the night.

Besides Lopez, the American Music Awards will also showcase performances from a lineup of other artists, including Mariah Carey, Green Day, Jennifer Hudson, Kane Brown, Raye, Chaka Khan, Brad Paisley, Gladys Knight, and Stray Kids. Several more stars, such as Carrie Underwood, Jimmy Kimmel, and Gloria Estefan, are also expected to appear.

The world’s largest fan-voted award show will be broadcast globally and streamed digitally, continuing its legacy of celebrating influential artists and their passionate fanbases. As it airs on Memorial Day, the show traditionally honors US troops and veterans, adding a layer of significance to the holiday broadcast.

According to the AMA website, Lopez’s return will complement what is sure to be “a night of unforgettable performances.” As Jay Penske, the CEO of Dick Clark Productions (the production company behind the event), stated, “Jennifer’s incredible talent and incomparable stage presence make her the ideal host of the show.”

Despite her recent injury, fans eagerly await Lopez’s return to the AMAs in under two weeks, which will air on CBS and Paramount+ at 8 p.m. ET / 5 p.m. PT.
